Hemorrhoid Banding

What is hemorrhoid banding?

Hemorrhoid banding is a procedure where your doctor will place a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. This causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and eventually fall off.

Hemorrhoid banding is usually recommended for small to medium-sized hemorrhoids. It is a relatively quick and painless procedure and has a high success rate. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, so it is important to discuss the risks and beenfits with your doctor before deciding if itis the right treatment for you.

What are some complications of banding?

The complications/side effects of banding are generally mild. They include some pain, bleeding, or discharge for a few days.

If you develop the following symptoms, please call your doctor immediately or seek care at your local emergency department or urgent care:

  • You have new or increased bleeding from your rectum
  • you have tissue sticking out from your rectum that you can't push back in
  • you are not able to pass bowel movements due to pain
  • your symptoms are getting worse even with home care
  • you have a fever
